How to Stop Rust

Rust, if untreated, can quickly spread and literally kill your car. It isn’t something that can be ignored once it has appeared, and it can also be quite expensive to repair.

Rust is caused by moisture on the metal framework of your car. Even though all cars are somewhat protected by their paintwork, whenever you go out, your car suffers at the likes of pebbles and stones, that flick up, damaging the paintwork, causing little nicks to appear. These nicks then allow water in onto the bare metal, and that is when rust occurs.  Por 15 can prevent rust from setting in and destroying your car.

Por15 makes several different products which includes solvent, a product that is used to clean paint and thinning Por15 preventative paint.  Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Wipe off parts with a rag or wire brush before soaking in parts washer.

Do not clean parts unnecessarily.

Reduce the quantity of solvent used by implementing a two-stage cleaning system. The first stage should clean the dirtiest parts. The second stage uses cleaner solvent for final cleaning and rinsing. When the cleaning solution in the second stage is no longer effective, it can then be used to replace the solvent in the first stage. Fresh solvent is then used to replace the second stage.

Parts washers should have a recirculating feature with built-in filtration to continuously remove dirt and contaminants. This will extend the life of the solvent.

Drip racks or trays can help increase drainage from parts to minimize solvent loss.

When not in use, solvent streams should be turned off and lids on parts washers should be kept closed to reduce evaporative solvent loss.

Do not dispose of used solvent on the ground or in a storm drain

Do not combine spent solvent with used oil.

Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides, usually red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron with oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances. Rust consists of hydrated iron oxides, and iron oxide-hydroxide.

Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass eventually converts entirely to rust and disintegrates. The corrosion of aluminum is extremely slow because the resulting aluminum oxide forms a conformal coating, which protects the remaining aluminum. This process is known as passivation.

Rust prevention can occur with the proper products.
