How to Stop Rust

In some locations around the United States, it is common to have sporadic rain showers during the spring and summer months.  This can spell disaster for your metal patio furniture as it starts to rust and corrode.  To promote rust prevention, the first step is weatherproofing your metal furniture with rust prevention paint.  If your metal patio furniture has already been damaged by rust, first use a rust dissolving solvent to clean the furniture, then apply the rust prevention paint. 

With the rust prevention paint your patio furniture will last for years and be in no danger of damage from rust or corrosion.  You might also consider repainting your deck if signs of rust have begun to appear in between cracks in the boards or seldom tread corners.

If you’re looking to prevent rust from forming on your car or any other metal structure, there are a variety of over the counter options to try. By far, the most common is the corrosion inhibitor, sometimes known as the rust inhibitor. These inhibitors are chemical compounds, and they are almost always added to another medium such as gas or another kind of fluid. They are then applied directly to the metal.

These compounds have varying levels of effectiveness, and this is primarily affected by the amount of liquid added as well as fluid composition. When mixed correctly, they usually work in an efficiency range between 90 and 99%. The two rust inhibitor options are anodic inhibitors and cathodic inhibitors—one of which forms a passivation layer, and one of which inhibits oxidation.

Rust, if untreated, can quickly spread and literally kill your car. It isn’t something that can be ignored once it has appeared, and it can also be quite expensive to repair.

Rust is caused by moisture on the metal framework of your car. Even though all cars are somewhat protected by their paintwork, whenever you go out, your car suffers at the likes of pebbles and stones, that flick up, damaging the paintwork, causing little nicks to appear. These nicks then allow water in onto the bare metal, and that is when rust occurs.  Por 15 can prevent rust from setting in and destroying your car.

Rust can kill a bike and it starts with the bicycle frame.  Using a primer like Por15 on your bike can prevent rust and avoid you having to purchase a new bike frame.

Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides, usually red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron with oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances. Rust consists of hydrated iron oxides, and iron oxide-hydroxide.

Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass eventually converts entirely to rust and disintegrates. The corrosion of aluminum is extremely slow because the resulting aluminum oxide forms a conformal coating, which protects the remaining aluminum. This process is known as passivation.
